County supervisors green light rehabilitation work on Lawrence Expressway
SAN JOSE – Residents in the west valley communities of Cupertino, west San Jose, Santa Clara, Saratoga, and Sunnyvale will see work begin to improve conditions on Lawrence Expressway between Quito and Homestead Roads. The work will resurface the asphalt, repair damage caused by tree roots, as well as improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists at several intersections.
“The County has a responsibility to maintain its expressways,” said Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian. “While the work may sound routine, it will have a tangible and positive impact on everyone who uses Lawrence Expressway, from drivers to cyclists to folks just trying to cross the roadway safely.”
Work on the expressway will include” asphalt overlay; new pavement striping and markings; installation of new roadway signage; curb, gutter, and sidewalk repairs; curb ramp upgrades; bridge deck maintenance; and new guardrail systems and concrete barriers.
More specifically, seven intersections on Lawrence Expressway will be improved during this project. New pedestrian sensors, accessible pedestrian signals, and new traffic cameras will be installed at three intersections. Other intersections will also see the installation of accessible pedestrian signals, pedestrian sensors, new bicycle detector loops, and wiring.
The bridge crossing at Stevens Creek Boulevard will also see improvements in the form of deck treatments, such as a polyester concrete overlay, joint replacement, and small repairs.
“These repairs and improvements will positively impact residents in several communities in the County,” said Simitian. “Lawrence Expressway is a key connector for these communities, including to each other as well as to local hospitals, retail centers, schools, and parks. It’s important we maintain this thoroughfare, improve pedestrian safety, and accessibility for all.”
The Lawrence Expressway rehabilitation work is expected to start late August/early September 2024 and last through February 2025.
